River Saalach

River Saalach
  • Level of difficulty: moderate, WW III / IV
  • Distance: about 10 kilometers
  • Duration: 3 hours

Not far from Salzburg, Austria is a section of the Saalach River, between Lofer and Unken, which can be rafted. This section is divided into three stretches. The 11km between Au and Unken is rated as a Class III and is the most heavily travelled of the three sections. It offers gently rolling waves and magnificent scenery making it ideal for beginners and groups with children.

The second stretch is called the World Cup Course. It is rated Class IV and is the site of the annual Class IV International Kayaking Rodeo. This stretch flows through a densely forested gorge and contains large wave trains with scattered large holes that should be avoided. The last stretch is called Devil’s Gorge. It is only 4km long but is rated Class V. Among rafting enthusiasts, this short stretch of river is probably one of the most well-known white water rafting stretches in all of Austria.
