Rivers of Transcarpathia

Rivers of Transcarpathia

All the rivers of Transcarpathia belong to the Tisa river basin which flows along the southern border of the region. Near the city of Rakhiv the Black Tisa and White Tisa unite to form this major Transcarpathian waterway. The Tisa’s largest tributaries are the Teresva, Tereblya, Rika, Borzhava, Latorica and the Uzh.

Every seventh river in Ukraine flows through Transcarpathia; the majority of those flow through the Ukrainian Carpathians and are therefore classified as Mountain Rivers. Rivers which flow through the Transcarpathian low-lands are characterized as lowland rivers.

The water near the source of Carpathian Mountain rivers is the cleanest water in Ukraine. Unfortunately, downstream they become increasingly polluted as raw sewage or sewage processed by ineffective treatment facilities is dumped into them.
