As it is shown on the map of ecological situation in Ukraine, many bodies of water are polluted with pesticides, bacteria and other organic matter, phenols and oil products. In some bodies of water the concentration of metals is dangerously near maximum allowable concentrations. In many areas, the concentration of phytoplankton increases during the summer. Periodically infectious disease outbreaks are traced to bodies of water; they confirm contamination by pathogenic bacteria, protozoa and viruses.
The most interaction between surface and groundwater occurs in the river valleys. Unregulated residential, vacation and agricultural development in river floodplains (and this applies to almost all river basins) leads to contamination of both surface and groundwater.
